Dulwich, London SE22. - Miriam Margolyes - 12/2004 My grandfather was SIGISMUND SANDMANN (SANDEMAN) born in Middlesborough, York Uk in 1867 (acccording to a birth entry which I have not yet seen. He married in Liverpool, FLORA POSNER. Their daughter, Ruth (born in Liverpool) was my late mother. I know my grandfather had a brother, Joe and a sister, Rosie. Neither had children. He also had a brother who was blind (first name unknown) who was thought to have been put in a home in Manchester. At some point, he was in South Africa. Two photos exist, taken in DURBAN RSA. I remember my mother telling me that he had met Barney Barnato (the diamond man) either on the boat to RSA or actually there. That might help to date his time in RSA-I'll have to look up Barney Barnato-Cecil Rhodes time I think. My hand is shaking as I type this-and I am sorry it's midnight in RSA-otherwise I would have phoned you at once! YES-SIGI IS MY GRANDFATHER-my dear late mother's father. As the photo took shape on my screen, I saw the dead, lost face of my dear grandfather-who died in 1946 or 1947, when I was 5 or 6 (I was born in 1941). Joe Sandeman was the musical director of a well-known magician (THE GREAT LEVANT) & he married late in life-a woman called ETHEL MICHAEL. (No-one liked her-everyone LOVED him!) Rosie Sandeman never got married-she was always known as Auntie Rosie-I have a feeling she died in Oxford. Sigi (Sigismund Sandeman) was born in Middlesborough, Yorks in 1867. I am about to get his birth cert. He changed his name to SIDNEY WALTERS in the First World War. He married Flora Posner in Liverpool (who was a teacher in the Jews Free School in London) & was a furniture dealer in Camberwell, South London. He was a (Jewish) Mason, founder of the (now defunct) New Cross Synagogue & had 4 children. Jack-died as a baby-his nurse let him fall out of the pram. Doris- (maybe named after his sister-your great-grandmother???) who was brilliant but died in 1917 from meningitis, after having won a Scholarship to Goldsmith's College, London. The family never recovered from this blow. Augusta (aka Gusta) elegant auburn-haired -ran a hat & dress shop in Peckam until she married Ben TOSH & had 3 children -Jack, Buffy & Doris-all still alive in London. Ruth-my mother, born 1905, the youngest-(?) born in Liverpool, who married my (Scottish) father, Joseph MARGOLYES, a GP. I am their only child. I am an actress, was in RSA last year-in Jo'burg, making a film. Another distant cousin, on my father's side is DUDLEY WERNER, the cancer specialist in Cape Town & the Werner family of Jo'burg, who have just moved to Australia. I am DYING to hear your voice. I shall phone you tomorrow at a reasonable hour! It seems as if Doris & I assume Elizabeth were the South African branch-with whom we lost touch-but I remember Mummy being afraid to have a child because a cousin in S Africa died in childbirth.
