Note | Eulogy for Judith Yael Morgan
Judith Yael Morgan was born 13 March 1966 in Johannesburg. She matriculated at Waverley Girls High School in 1983. Judy had a very successful academic career. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Wits. After that she completed an honours degree in Psychology at Rhodes University. After working for a few years she went to London and was a research fellow at the Tavistock Clinic where she also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychoanalytical studies and infant observation. After returning to South Africa in 1999 she completed her Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Johannesburg where she passed with distinction. From 2000 to 2002 she was head of the Psychology Department at the Coronation Women and Children's Clinic and from 2002 to 2006 she was Head of the Psychology Department at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg.
Judy was creative, emotionally sensitive and empathic. She had a wonderful sense of humour and loved animals. She was a free spirit who enjoyed life before she got ill.
Her hobbies were art, photography, yoga and literature.
Judy suffered from a terribly pernicious depression that began to eat away at her life more than five years ago. At first she resisted it by keeping on with her life, her work and her relationships but eventually the illness broke down her resistance and she had a serious breakdown. Judy was eventually somewhat stabilized on medication and spent two year in the care of her loving parents. Two years ago she decided to move to Cape Town to live near her two brothers Jonathan and Barak where she pursued her interest in photography and art. She lived in a small house just a few hundred meters from both of her brothers and their families - one on each side of her. Her home when she bought it was a real fix me up and she transformed it into a beautiful space and home for herself, her cats Tao and Callie and her dog Shanti.
She began to rebuild her life with enormous courage and fortitude under extremely difficult circumstances.
She is deeply mourned by her parents Ora and Issy, her brothers Jonathan and Barak and her sister Ruth.
In March 2012 a memorial library was opening in Judy's name at the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust, 1 Tenth Rd., Kew, Johannesburg. See: http://www.ububele.org/. |
