Jacob became a citizen of the United States on 1 January 1906. On his Petition to Naturalize, he stated that he was born 4 September 1862 and departed for the U.S. from Homburg on 22 July 1895 abroard the S.S. Prussia, arriving in New York City on 1 August 1895. He also stated his wife, Taube Hinde (calling herself "Hannah"). Davidowitz was born in Dwinsk, Russia and resided at 441 West 124th Street, New York City. He gave his sons and one daughter's birth dates, saying that (Harry) Solomon, b. 10 Dec 1887 "resides at N.Y."; Samuel, b. 15 May 1890 "resides at Passaic, New Jersey"; Louis, b. 5 Oct 1894 (no residence given so one may assume he was with the family in New York) and Sarah, b. 12 September 1896 "in Russia, resides at N.Y." He called himself a "manufacturer" on the Petition. His witnesses were a couple, Max and Rachel Neuman, who lived at his address, 441 W. 124 St., NY.
The town he named in his Petition - Soyadostock - could not be fund in any of my reference books.
He was a "leather-goods worker" and an "awning Maker." In 1920, when Harry, his son, applied for a Passport, Jacob was said to be living at 2548 N. 30th Street, Philadelphia.
On the 1910 Census the family was living at 236 Cherry Street, Manhattan (New York County); he and Hannah had been married 24 years and Jacob declared he had submitted his Petition to Naturalize. |
