Death
The Commercial Appeal - Memphis, TN Obituaries - 27/12/2011 Alvin Elias Sampson was born March 2, 1932 and passed away peacefully Friday, December 23, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Memphis. He was born in Detroit, MI and moved to Los Angeles at a young age. After spending his youth in LA, at age 18, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Air Force. His love for the military began with his service in the Strategic Air Command of the US Air Force during the Korean War. After his service, he made his life with deceased wife Sheila Levy Sampson and their two daughters in LA and then New York. Al, in retirement, moved to Memphis and always loved its charm. Al embraced Memphis and Memphis embraced Al. He found great fulfillment in being a docent at the Memphis Zoo especially teaching children about the animals. Al was also passionate about helping local veterans any way he could as a regular volunteer at the VA Hospital. Al's great sense of humor and joy for living uplifted everyone who knew him. A true renaissance man with many interests, he was an avid naturalist, photographer, and bird watcher who most loved Bald Eagles. When Al moved to Memphis he met and married Gail Fogelman Sampson and they spent four beautiful years together traveling and spending time with family. He leaves two daughters, Traci Sampson (Lee Harness) of Memphis, Beth Sampson (Shane Caraveo) of British Columbia Canada; stepdaughter, Marcy Milman (Ken) of Memphis; and two granddaughters, Mira Milman and Sarina Milman, whom he adored; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Leila and Ben Wohl of Los Angeles; and nephews, Alan Wohl (Susan) of Los Angeles and David Wohl (Terri) of Los Angeles. Al loved life and never knew a stranger. He is most loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial donations can be made to the Memphis Zoo and Temple Israel. http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2011/dec/27/memphis-area-obituaries-dec-27-2011/
