Note | So back to the main issue. Who was Sarah. We have one main clue. In the Russian census of 1897, Chaim and Mendel are noted as being resident at Ogorodnaya Street, N° 37/39 Apt 1 in Dvinsk (BTW – most of the houses on this street were brothels!). They were living with their uncle and aunt. Nahum ben Hirsch and Khaya bat Nuech (Noah) Tzivian.
This raises the following possibilities:
1) The Tzivians must be the family of their mother - Sarah, as the fathers of uncle Nahum and aunt Khaya have a different name than David Meir’s own father, which was Getzel.
2) So was the Tzivian family the family of Sarah’s mother or father? Unfortunately, we don’t know.
To sum up, Sarah Zelikman. David Meir’s first wife, was either the daughter of Hirsh Tzivian and the sister of Nahum, or the daughter of Nuech (Noah) and sister to Khaya, their family name remaining a mystery. We may never know the answer, but I should note that I am in contact with the Tzivian family here in Israel, specifically the grandson of Nahum Tzivian. If Sarah was in fact the sister of Nahum, we also know of another sister named Ada (who emigrated to England).
