June 17, 1922 - Sept. 15, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Sylvia Doris Katz, 88, of South Bend, Indiana, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013.
She was born June 17, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late William and Bess (Silverman) Wolfson. Sylvia was married to Aaron Golden and Sam Katz. She is survived by her four sons, Marc Golden of South Bend, Ed Golden of Kittery, Maine, Larry Katz of Jimtown and Martin Katz of San Jose, California; her daughters-in-law, Ilene Golden and Carrie Katz; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sylvia loved to dance and her sons remember her practicing her steps to music that ranged from rock to swing, salsa and jazz. She organized numerous dance parties through the years, especially for her fellow residents at Water Oaks Estates in Lady Lake, Florida. After her first husband Aaron's death in a traffic accident in Grand Rapids, Sylvia was introduced by a mutual friend to Sam Katz, whom she married in 1955 and moved to South Bend. Together, they raised their four boys and traveled around the country with them, and in later years with some of their grandchildren on one of their many ski trips to Colorado and other destinations. Their travels also took them to Europe and Israel. Sylvia also enjoyed playing tennis and golf. Following Sam's death in April 1984, Sylvia continued dancing with Joe Wallerstein, all the way to Lady Lake, Florida, where they shared a home until his death in February 2007. Sylvia returned to live in South Bend in 2010, where she enjoyed visits with her family and many friends. Funeral services will be at 1 pm today, Sept. 17, 2013, at Sinai Synagogue, 1102 E. Lasalle Ave., South Bend, Rabbi Michael Freidland officiating.
Burial will follow at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka.
