Fleischer in 1972 was founding co-chairman of PRIDE in St. Louis, the nation’s first organization to improve relations between construction employers, unions and project owners. "I shudder to think how many corporations took one look at St. Louis and decided not to locate here or otherwise do business here–all because we in the construction industry were not getting along," said Fleischer on PRIDE’s 25th anniversary. "We were our own worst enemies until we got together and said, ‘Enough is enough.’" Fleischer was former president of Fleischer-Seeger Construction Co. and president and founder of Fleischer Co.

Note | Birth: Oct. 14, 1915
Death: Dec. 17, 2003
Alfred J. Fleischer was a pioneering civic leader credited for his role in unifying labor and management in the St. Louis construction industry. Fleischer was the first management co-chairman of PRIDE of St. Louis Inc., a group that eased decades of tense and sometimes violent labor relations in the construction industry.
A native St. Louisan, Mr. Fleischer earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Washington University. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II before he joined his father at Fleischer-Seeger Construction Co.
Mr. Fleischer eventually became president of the company. In his dealings in the industry, he witnessed firsthand frequent work stoppages and low productivity that resulted from disputes between labor and management. He also believed the disputes cast a negative image on St. Louis and turned away prospective businesses.
When PRIDE of St. Louis Inc. was formed in 1972, Mr. Fleischer became the first co-chairman for management. Richard Mantia was named co-chairman for labor.
The two were the guiding forces in building cooperation between the two sides and offering a productive forum to work out disputes. PRIDE, which stands for Productivity and Responsibility Increase Development and Employment, is the oldest such voluntary agreement in the country.
Fleischer was president of Fleischer-Seeger Construction Co. until the company was sold in 1995. He later founded and was president of Fleischer Cos., a property management company, until his death.
Mr. Fleischer was a past president of the Associated General Contractors of St. Louis and a director of the National Corporation for Housing Partnerships.
As a member of the U.S. Olympics Committee, Mr. Fleischer promoted St. Louis as a possible host city of the Games. He also led a group of investors in a proposal to renovate the now-demolished Arena into an aquarium.
As a member and former chairman of the Convention and Visitors Commission of Greater St. Louis, Mr. Fleischer had a hand in major issues, such as the expansion of the city's convention center.
In the early 1990s, in response to continued criticism of the lack of minority participation on city-funded construction jobs, Mr. Fleischer called a meeting between PRIDE's board of directors and local officials to open up communication and look for remedies.
Mr. Fleischer was a chairman emeritus of Junior Achievement of Mississippi Valley.
Mr. Fleischer served as a past president of Congregation Shaare Emeth and board member of the St. Louis chapter of the American Society for Technion.
His wife, Eva Davidson Fleischer, died in 1998.
