Death
Nick E. Biondich, age 82, of Menomonie, formerly of Superior, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. Nick Emil Biondich was born Dec. 28, 1923, the son of Croatian immigrants Nick and Katherine (Biondich) Biondich. After graduation from Luther L. Wright High School in 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. As a sergeant, he served during World War II as a squad leader with Baker Company, 35th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lighting) at Guadalcanal New Georgia, the Liberation of the Philippine Islands, and as part of the U.S. Occupation Forces of Japan in the Pacific Theater. During his service, he received many decorations, including the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster for wounds suffered against the Japanese during the liberation of the Philippine Islands, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. Following occupation duties in Japan, he was honorably discharged and returned to Ironwood, Mich. Nick married Betty Obiden on Feb. 2, 1955. Nick worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Nick started out as a postal guard on the mail trains as they traveled throughout the Midwest. He later transferred to the main post office in Duluth, Minn. Nick and Betty moved from Superior in 1994 and resided in Menomonie. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Menomonie and the Disabled American Veterans. Nick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; three sons, Nick Jr. of St. Paul, Minn., Richard (Peg) of Menomonie, and Mitchell (Nancy) of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, Marko (Abby), Derek, Kendyl and D.J.; a sister, Betty Mortorelli of Superior; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Anne and Katherine. Funeral services were Saturday, July 1, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Menomonie with the Rev. Thomas Krieg officiating. Military honors were provided by the Menomonie Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be at a later date at the family plot in Ironwood.
