In 1974, Sr. Schwab was recruited by the University of Louisville as chairman of the department of psychiatry, a position he held until 1991. During that time he made a number of important contributions to the state of Kentucky, including tripling the number of faculty members in the department of psychiatry, facilitating the growth of mental health services and playing an instrumental role in developing a statewide network of community mental health centers. He wrote extensively in that field, as well as on the interface between physical and psychiatric disorders. Of particular note is his landmark book, "The Handbook of Psychiatric Consultation." Dr. Schwab is survived by his wife, Ruby B. Schwab; a daughter, Dr. Mary Schwab Stone (Professor A. Douglas Stone); grandsons, John and William Stone; brothers, Dr. J. Matthew Schwab (Marie) and family and Joseph Schwab and family; and sisters, Mrs. Mary Maitland DeLand (Frank) and family and Mrs. Eleanor Alice Kates (Robert, deceased) and family.
Service: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 2119 Payne St. (at Clifton Avenue), with private burial to follow. Visitation: 10 a.m. preceding the service at the church. Arrangements: Pearson's Funeral Home.
