Note | Immigrating to Palestine by Illegal Ship
Ruth, and her parents Philip and Anna Wagschal, escaped from Vienna Austria after Crystal Night. Ze'ev Sherf, who had emigrated to Palestine earlier, had pawned one year of his future wages to send them ship passage out of Europe. They made it across the border by train to Yugoslavia, then Italy, and that they almost did not get on the ship. The ship might have been the Atrato, and they transferred to the Colorado in mid-seas! The ship might have arrived in Palestine on November 30, 1938, but it could have been as late as 1939. See http://paulsilverstone.com/immigration/Primary/Aliyah/shiplist1.php. |
