Joseph was an officer of the Robfogel Paper Company of St. Paul Street, one of Rochester's largest dealers in paper and twine. He was a founder and organizer of Flower City Lodge of the Masons, having always served as its treasurer, and was one of the organizers of Beth Jehuda Center, of which he was the first president. Joseph was active in Rochester Jewish philanthropic organizations and was a liberal giver to many charitable causes. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Children's Home, the Jewish Welfare Council, and the Jewish Home for the Aged. He was a member of Damascus Temple. He was also involved in the Keren Hayesod (Palestine Foundation Fund), which established a Rochester office in 1923 to conduct Zionist fundraising campaigns.
