Printing Exec George Lee Beslow, 75
January 31, 1997|By Kenan Heise, Tribune Staff Writer.
George Lee Beslow, 75, retired president of Beslow Associates Inc. and of National Suburban Directories, Inc., was a pioneer and innovator in web-offset printing, computer typesetting and the publishing of independent telephone directories.
A resident of Glenview and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., he died Wednesday in Jupiter Medical Center in Jupiter, Fla.
Mr. Beslow, who had worked for a letterpress printing house up until the mid-1950s, helped introduce first the web-offset process to the printing industry in the city in the late 1950s and then prepress computerized typesetting here in the early 1970s. His Beslow Associates in Northbrook helped advise printing firms in both methods.
In the early 1960s, he printed a number of telephone directories independently of the Bell system.
Mr. Beslow worked his way through the University of Illinois as a waiter and an assistant in the sociology department. He subsequently established the George Beslow Fellowship there for graduate students in anthropology and sociology.
In World War II, he was a lieutenant commander in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Erda; three sons, Peter, John and Michael; a daughter, Wendy Saielli; two stepdaughters, Tanya Biebel and Alexandrea Gjertsen; a stepson, Berten Johnson; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Piser Weinstein Menorah Chapel, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd, Skokie.
