Death
Published in The Marblehead Reporter from Nov. 4 to Nov. 10, 2011 Beckert, Jean Wiggin, 85, of Sarasota Florida, formerly of Swampscott and Marblehead, MA. Jean Wiggin Beckert, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died October 20 after a short illness. She was born in Boston and grew up in nearby Brookline, MA where she graduated from the Windsor School and went on to attend Vassar College. During WWII, she taught at Windsor, and when the war ended, she met and married William (Bill) Charles Beckert. The couple moved to Swampscott, MA, where they had two children. Ultimately, the family moved to Marblehead and then later Jean and Bill retired to Florida. Jean was a devoted mother, participating actively in the PTA and co-leading her sons Boy Scout troop, then maintaining consistent and supportive contact with them as they grew and struck out on their own. Jean had a wide circle of friends with whom she loved to play tennis, golf and bridge, and she was a longtime member of the Swampscott Garden Club. Among those who loved her, she was known for her generous spirit, a wonderfully sharp sense of humor, her loving and supportive nature, and her open mindedness. She never missed making her weekend check-in calls to both children. Over time these calls became a family tradition. She taught her children and grand children the meaning of family and unconditional love and support. Her children learned that a mother never stops being a mother no matter how old they got. She was a wonderful example for all her family. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bill Beckert; her son Arthur Wiggin Beckert and his wife Betsy Haas Beckert, and their children, Rachael, Molly, and Spencer; and her daughter, Ann Beckert, and Anns daughter Galen. There will be a small memorial service at Plymouth Harbor in Sarasota Florida on Saturday December 3rd at 2:30. Donations in Jeans honor may be made to The Legacy Fund at Plymouth Harbor, 700 John Ringling Blvd, Sarasota, Florida, 34236. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/wickedlocal-marblehead/obituary-print.aspx?n=jean-beckert&pid=154459729
