Source | Jewish Gen Family Finder - Family Tree 15822, Gene LePere - genealogical research Publication: Gene Hirshhorn-LePere [ghlinla@att.net] Text: Notes for TAUBE MIRIAM (MARY) JAFFE:
Arrived in U.S. in 1886. As there is no 1890 Federal Census (it burned), we have her already married in 1900 and living with Morris and her two eldest children at 114 East 108th Street, Manhattan, New York County, NY
In the 1910 Federal Census, the family is complete: Morris is 43, Mary is 41; Hannah is 16; Ella is 15; Solomon is 9 and Harold (Harry) is 2 years old. They live at 20A Fayette Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, NY
In the 1920 Federal Census, the family is still at 20A Fayette Street but Ella has married and living elsewhere. Now Morris is 52, Mary is 49, Hannah is 25, Solomon is 19 and Harold is 12. Ella has married Harry Phillips and is living with her husband (both as lodgers) with a Henrietta G. Andrews and several other people at 621 St. Marks Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Also, in 1917/18 Solomon Registered for the WWI Draft. His notes are attached to his information. He died about a year or two later by drowning.
In the 1930 Federal Census, the family was living at 500 Montgomery Street, Brooklyn. Morris was working as a cutter in the clothing industry; Ella, now calling herself Anna, was working as a stenographer in novelties - she either has divorced her husband or they never really married (which is what family lore suggests). In any case, she is again using Blyer as her last name; Harold was a clerk working for the U.S. Patent Office. Morris said he arrived in the United States in 1887 and was naturalized. Mary said she arrived in 1887 also, but she likely arrived in 1886 when her sister said she did. By virtue of Morris' Naturalization, she, too became a U.S. Citizen. They paid $70.00 a month rent on their apartment. |
