The Runic was launched on October 25, 1900 and delivered December 22, 1900. She made her maiden voyage on January 3, 1901 from Liverpool to Sydney, via the Cape. On November 25, 1901 she towed the disabled Dunottar Castle of the Union Castle Line into Dakar. Between 1917 and 1919 she operated under the Liner Requisition Scheme. On November 3, 1928 the Runic collided with HMS London off Gourock Pier, Clyde. In December 1929 she made her last White Star Line voyage. In May 1930 she was sold to Chr. Salvesons Sevilla Whaling Company and rebuilt as the whaling fleet mother-ship at Germania shipyard, Kiel. She was then renamed New Sevilla with a tonnage of 13,801 GRT. On September 20, 1940 she was torpedoed and sunk off Galway by the German submarine U-138 with the loss of two lives.
