Psalms for Shirley Seligman
Shir LeMa'alot (Song of Ascents) - Psalms 121

A Song of Ascents. I will lift up mine eyes unto the mountains: from whence shall my help come?

My help cometh from God, who made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; He that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber nor sleep.

God is thy keeper; God is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

God shall keep thee from all evil; He shall keep thy soul.

God shall guard thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth and for ever.

Eshet Chayil - Proverbs, Mishlai 31: 10-31

A woman of valour who can find? for her price is far above rubies.

The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, and he hath no lack of gain.

She doeth him good and not evil all the days of her life.

She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

She is like the merchant-ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth food to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

She considereth a field, and buyeth it; with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

She girdeth her loins with strength, and maketh strong her arms.

She perceiveth that her merchandise is good; her lamp goeth not out by night.

She layeth her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.

She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

She maketh for herself coverlets; her clothing is fine linen and purple.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

She maketh linen garments and selleth them; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

Strength and dignity are her clothing; and she laugheth at the time to come.

She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and the law of kindness is on her tongue.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her:

'Many daughters have done valiantly, but thou excellest them all.'

Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth

God, she shall be praised.

Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her works praise her in the gates.

Reading for the name Shirley from Psalm 119
SHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause; but my heart standeth in awe of Thy words. I rejoice at Thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. I hate and abhor falsehood; Thy law do I love. Seven times a day do I praise Thee, because of Thy righteous ordinances. Great peace have they that love Thy law; and there is no stumbling for them. I have hoped for Thy salvation, O God, and have done Thy commandments. My soul hath observed Thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. I have observed Thy precepts and Thy testimonies; for all my ways are before Thee. (161- 168)
YOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me; give me understanding, that I may learn Thy commandments. They that fear Thee shall see me and be glad, because I have hope in Thy word. I know, O God, that Thy judgments are righteous, and that in faithfulness Thou hast afflicted me. Let, I pray Thee, Thy loving kindness be ready to comfort me, according to Thy promise unto Thy servant. Let Thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live; for Thy law is my delight. Let the proud be put to shame, for they have distorted my cause with falsehood; but I will meditate in Thy precepts. Let those that fear Thee return unto me, and they that know Thy testimonies.Let my heart be undivided in Thy statutes, in order that I may not be put to shame. (73-80)
RESH. O see mine affliction, and rescue me; for I do not forget Thy law. Plead Thou my cause, and redeem me; quicken me according to Thy word. Salvation is far from the wicked; for they seek not Thy statutes.  Great are Thy compassions, O God; quicken me as Thou art wont. Many are my persecutors and mine adversaries; yet have I not turned aside from Thy testimonies. I beheld them that were faithless, and strove with them; because they observed not Thy word.  O see how I love Thy precepts; quicken me, O God, according to Thy loving kindness. The beginning of Thy word is truth; and all Thy righteous ordinance endureth for ever. (153-160)

LAMED. For ever, O God, Thy word standeth fast in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations; Thou hast established the earth, and it standeth. They stand this day according to Thine ordinances; for all things are Thy servants. Unless Thy law had been my delight, I should then have perished in mine affliction. I will never forget Thy precepts; for with them Thou hast quickened me. I am Thine, save me; for I have sought Thy precepts. The wicked have waited for me to destroy me; but I will consider Thy testimonies. I have seen an end to every purpose; but Thy commandment is exceeding broad. (89-96).
