Making a Donation or Volunteering for the Great Synagogue and Shulhoyf of Vilna Project
After we were forced to cancel the excavation in 2020, we are returning for another season of excavation at the site of the Great Synagogue of Vilna this summer (2021).

The successful outcome of previous seasons of excavations have shown us the potential of continued excavation at the site to uncover further sections of the Great Synagogue and the surrounding twelve synagogues, miqve and communal buildings known as the Shulhoyf. Sections of the Great Synagogue, including its magnificent Bimah were uncovered in 2019. The major find was an inscription dedicated to the donation of a Torah reading table by followers of the Gaon of Vilna. This summer’s exciting excavation goal is to focus on the full exposure of the Bimah and Aron Kodesh. The excavation will provide us with answers concerning the architecture of this important complex of buildings, while also exposing remains for future presentation. These, when appropriately conserved, can be integrated into an architectural proposal for 'The Jewish Memorial Centre in Vilnius', in cooperation with Lithuanian Authorities, the Vilnius Municipality and the existing Lithuanian Jewish community, all with the aim of ensuring that Jewish built cultural heritage is seen as an importance and inseparable part of Lithuanian heritage that needs to be celebrated by all and preserved for perpetuity.

Here is the opportunity to become involved in this important and exciting project. Beyond the involvement in an important heritage project to recover part of the lost heritage of the Jews of Lithuania, the Litvaks, this project also provides the opportunity for many Jews of Litvak origin, to reconnect with their own history by helping to discover the remains of the most important monument of Litvak Jewry.

If you are interested in participating in the excavation in Vilnius between the 9th to 27th August 2021, you are welcome to volunteer for the excavation. Please contact us for details.

As we have limited institutional funding from the Good Will Foundation for this project, we are seeking help from you, those with a connection to Vilna, or with a Litvak family relationship and from the wider public. All help, of whatever amount, is appreciated..

Naming Opportunities
The Great Synagogue & Shulhoyf of Vilna Project provides an intriguing naming opportunity. We are honoured to invite you to join us in this undertaking. It is with the help and support of our friends from around the world who strongly believe in the importance of our work, that our vision will become a reality for the benefit of present and future generations. Donors who wish will be listed on this site and their names will also be written for perpetuity in the publication volumes that will accompany our work.
The Great Synagogue & Shulhoyf of Vilna Project will be reconvening the excavation in Vilnius in August 2021. Full details of the coming excavation will be posted here and on our Facebook page, though if you are interested in participating then you are welcome to contact us by mail. While excavating requires basic physical agility, there are also opportunities for those with physical challenges in supporting roles for the excavation.
