We are here to remember Shirley, to remember her life, to remember the happy times, to remember the difficult times and how we overcame them but most importantly, to remember Shirley, the wife, companion and friend, the mother and grandmother, whom we all loved.  We want that love and memory to continue with the permanence that this memorial stone embodies.

I once read that Rav Kook said, "Some stones have a heart but some hearts are of stone."  For us this stone will always have a heart - and our hearts will never be of stone for we carry within us memories that bring a smile or a tear, memories that will always be our Shirley.  When we think about it we find that stone, with its permanence, usefulness and continuity, has played an important role in our tradition since biblical times.  Points of interest had a monument, a matzeivah; a well had a stone covering it to protect water, a vital source of life - how apt an allusion that is; Jacob rested with his head on a stone before he wrestled the angel; the Ten Commandments were on stone tablets; the stone of Jerusalem and the Kotel; holy places had stone markers - and this, for us, is a holy place; we leave a stone when we come to visit this final resting place - we were here, we have not forgotten.

And so I dedicate this memorial, this matzeivah, to our beloved Shirley who lives on in our hearts and memories and in the lives of our children and grandchildren, Jon, Vered, Gideon, Lynn, Timna, Daniel, Ella, Tomer, Maya and Yael.

May our dear Shirley rest in Peace.
